Description: Tai Chi for Arthritis (TCA) is an evidence-based falls prevention program recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) National Council on Aging (NCOA), and U.S. Administration for Community Living. Developed by Dr. Paul Lam at the Tai Chi for Health Institute (TCHI) the program utilizes Tai Chi’s Sun style, not only for its’ ability to improve balance and relaxation, but for its’ ease of use for older adults. Led by a certified Tai Chi for Health Institute instructor, this program has been shown to improve movement, balance, strength, flexibility, and relaxation. TCA also decreases pain and falls. To improve mobility, movements include left, right, forward, backward, and a variety of combinations. This Sun Style of Tai Chi is appropriate for adults with or without the following: arthritis, back pain, joint pain, musculoskeletal conditions, and rheumatic diseases. It will also benefit those at a higher risk of falling. Tai Chi for Arthritis must be offered a minimum of 16 hours, which can be delivered one hour per week for 16 weeks or two hours per week for eight weeks.
